Femke Colaris (1985) Maastricht - NL is a Berlin based artist. Graduated from the University of Fine Arts in Maastricht, she works primarily with mixed media collage and drawing.
“My work is characterized by an intuitive approach to aesthetics, a wandering hand and sometimes unexpected compositions. With a focus on textures and colors, my work signals a return to the basic, where the appearance aims to be experimental but timeless. I use time honored, slow processes to source and to collect my material. I use found papers - archival magazines, paper scraps and other discarded material, some of them are a 100 years old. The paper is affected by its past and with all its spots and stains, colored gradients and imperfections, every single piece is unique.
I feel mentally attached to the spontaneous and dynamic rhythm of the process, which gives me a super focus and turns my mind into a meditative state. I am constantly moving the paper - shifting, correcting, replacing, organizing and seeing how it evolves organically until I reach a balanced composition or harmonious form.”
